Adidas is reportedly cutting close to half of its workforce at its India Tech Hub in Gurugram, with software engineers, data scientists and data engineers among the employees affected.
The sportswear company has confirmed that it is reducing roles within its technology organisation in India but has not provided a figure for the number of employees impacted.
In a statement cited by Wocult, Adidas said it had taken the “difficult decision” to eliminate a number of technology roles in India as it works to adapt its operating model to changing business requirements.
The company said it remains grateful to employees for their contributions and would provide transition assistance to those affected by the restructuring.
Around 350 employees reportedly affected
According to the report, the Gurugram technology hub has a workforce of around 700 people, with an estimated 350 or more employees potentially affected by the layoffs.
If accurate, that would amount to roughly 45-50 per cent of the hub's employees. However, the figure has not been independently confirmed by Adidas.
Technology roles reportedly impacted include software development, data science and data engineering positions.
The company said the organisational changes are intended to simplify certain functions, strengthen key capabilities and prepare Adidas for its longer-term technology and business requirements.
Employees informed during September 15 town hall
The reported layoffs were communicated to employees during a town hall meeting on September 15, according to the report.
Affected employees have reportedly been placed into two groups.
Some employees were issued exit letters immediately, while others have been asked to continue working until December. The latter group is expected to complete knowledge transfers and handovers to teams operating from Adidas' other technology hubs.
These employees will also reportedly have the opportunity to apply for other positions within the company during the transition period.
Those who do not find another internal role have reportedly been told that December 15 could be their final working day.
Details regarding severance, notice-period payments and other benefits for affected employees have not been confirmed.
Gurugram hub part of Adidas' global technology network
Adidas' Gurugram operations include its India marketing organisation as well as one of the company's Global Engineering Tech Hubs.
The technology hub forms part of Adidas' wider global engineering and digital operations.
The company has continued to expand its business-services footprint in India. In 2024, Adidas opened a Global Business Services centre in Chennai, adding to its presence in the country.
The latest restructuring comes as Adidas says it is reviewing its technology organisation and operating model to align them with evolving business and technology requirements.
