Air Canada Plane Hits Fire Truck at LaGuardia, Crash Caught on CCTV
Fatal collision during taxiing at New York airport leaves pilots dead and responders injured amid operational chaos
24-03-2026A shocking incident at LaGuardia Airport has come to light after surveillance footage captured an aircraft colliding with an emergency vehicle on the runway late Monday night.
The aircraft, Bombardier CRJ-900 operating as Air Canada Express Flight AC8646, was taxiing toward its gate after arriving from Montreal when it struck a fire truck belonging to the Port Authority. The flight was operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner of Air Canada.
Reports indicate that both pilots lost their lives in the crash, while two personnel aboard the fire truck sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. Their condition is said to be stable.
Flight tracking data showed the aircraft was moving at approximately 39 kmph at the time of impact. There were 72 passengers and four crew members onboard during the incident.
Air traffic control recordings reveal frantic attempts to prevent the collision, with repeated warnings issued to the vehicle on the runway. Controllers were heard urgently instructing the truck to stop, while also directing nearby aircraft to hold position.
The accident occurred against the backdrop of heavy congestion at the airport, linked to staffing shortages affecting the Transportation Security Administration. Passengers reportedly faced long delays as operations were disrupted.
The staffing crunch is tied to a broader funding deadlock in Washington involving the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the TSA. The situation has led to reduced workforce availability and increased pressure on airport operations nationwide.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision in detail.
