Air India has announced a temporary reduction in its international flight schedule, scaling back operations on widebody aircraft by approximately 15% until at least mid-July. The decision comes shortly after the tragic crash of an Air India Dreamliner in Ahmedabad on June 12.
The airline stated that the move is intended to enhance operational reliability, improve efficiency, and reduce disruption for travelers during a period marked by multiple external and internal challenges.
Posting an update on X (formerly Twitter), Air India cited various factors behind the disruption. These include mounting geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, airspace restrictions and curfews across several European and East Asian countries, as well as intensified safety inspections of its long-haul fleet. Additionally, both engineering teams and pilots are reportedly exercising extra caution following the recent accident.
In the last six days, these combined issues have led to the cancellation of 83 international flights, according to the airline.
The scaled-down schedule will also help maintain a buffer of spare aircraft, Air India said, making it easier to respond to last-minute technical issues or unforeseen changes.
“This is a carefully considered and temporary step under the current circumstances,” the airline noted.
To address passenger inconvenience, Air India confirmed that all affected travelers will be notified in advance. The airline is offering free rescheduling options or full refunds, depending on individual preference. An updated international flight schedule, effective June 20, 2025, will be released soon.
Regarding the Ahmedabad crash, the airline confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the root cause of the fatal incident. In the meantime, India’s aviation regulator DGCA has ordered comprehensive checks of Air India’s Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft.
Out of the 33 aircraft in the Dreamliner fleet, 26 have completed safety checks and received clearance to resume operations. The remainder are undergoing inspection and are expected to be cleared soon. Air India described the successful checks as a positive reflection of its safety and maintenance practices.
