Air India Express Cancels 85 Flights Due to Crew Shortage
Air India Express to operate 283 flights with Air India's assistance on 20 routes; passengers affected by cancellations offered full refund or rescheduling at no additional charge
09-05-2024Tata Group-owned Air India Express has announced the cancellation of 85 flights, affecting approximately 20% of its daily scheduled flights due to a shortage of cabin crew. The airline will operate 283 flights with support from Air India on 20 routes to mitigate disruptions.
This decision follows the termination of 30 crew members involved in mass sick leave, resulting in over 100 flight cancellations since Tuesday, affecting around 15,000 passengers.
Passengers affected by cancellations or delays beyond three hours are offered a full refund or the option to reschedule at no extra cost. Air India Express has terminated the services of the 30 cabin crew members who participated in mass sick leave without notice, citing violation of company rules. Remaining sick crew members have been given an ultimatum to rejoin duty by 4 pm on Thursday or face termination.
CEO Aloke Singh expressed regret over the situation, highlighting the dedication of the majority of the airline's crew. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has requested a detailed report on the flight disruptions and urged prompt resolution to assist affected passengers.
The disruptions, stemming from an unexpected crew shortage, began on Tuesday night.
