Aman Sehrawat Becomes India's Youngest Olympic Medalist with Wrestling Bronze
Aman Sehrawat clinched a historic bronze in the 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024, becoming India's youngest Olympic medalist
10-08-2024Aman Sehrawat made history by becoming India's youngest Olympic medalist after securing bronze in the 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the Paris Olympics 2024. On Friday, Aman triumphed over Puerto Rico's Darian Cruz in the bronze medal match, earning India's first wrestling medal of the Games. In an interview with NDTV, Aman shared that while his ultimate goal was to win gold, this bronze medal has fueled his determination to excel in the 2028 Olympics.
"My dream was to win an Olympic medal, and although I aimed for gold, I believe everything happens for a reason. This medal is a significant boost, and I am confident that I will perform even better in 2028," Aman told NDTV after his victory.
After losing to Japan's Rei Higuchi in the semifinals, Aman faced a challenge with his weight and had to quickly return within the permissible limit before the weigh-in. The young wrestler recounted how he worked tirelessly through the night, undergoing multiple training sessions without sleep, to meet the weight requirements.
"We did everything possible to cut the weight. After my match, I practiced for two hours, followed by a gym session around 1 am. By 3 am, I was almost there, but I didn't sleep at all. The main goal was to ensure my weight was within the permissible limit," Aman explained.
This achievement comes on the heels of Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the 50kg wrestling final for being overweight. Her case has been taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), with a decision expected by Sunday evening.
