Amit Shah Accuses Congress of Amending Constitution to Restrict Free Speech
Amit Shah criticized Congress for opposing the One Nation One Election Bill, highlighting their past constitutional amendments restricting fundamental rights
17-12-2024Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the Lok Sabha during the introduction of the One Nation One Election Bill, countered the Congress's objections, citing the party’s history of amending the Constitution multiple times, including curbing freedoms.
Shah stated, "The Congress amended the Constitution 77 times. If they could bring changes, including clauses restricting freedom of expression, they cannot oppose this Bill on grounds of requiring a constitutional amendment."
He specifically referred to a constitutional amendment under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which he said empowered Parliament to curtail fundamental rights. Highlighting Article 19A, Shah questioned its intent and asserted, "It was brought to restrict the freedom of expression."
His remarks drew strong protests from Congress members, leading to a heated exchange during the proceedings. The debate comes amid sharp divides between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over the feasibility and impact of simultaneous elections across the country.
