Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh was seriously injured in a stone-throwing attack on his car near Nagpur on the evening of November 19. Deshmukh, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was returning from a campaign meeting in Narkhed when the incident occurred.
The attack took place on Katol Jalalkheda Road near Belphata, as Deshmukh was traveling from Tinkheda Bishnoor Road to Katol. He was seated in the front passenger seat when stones were hurled at the vehicle. Blood was seen dripping from his head, and his white kurta was stained. A video from the scene showed the damaged windshield and shattered windows of the vehicle, with glass scattered inside.
Deshmukh was rushed to Alexis Hospital in Nagpur for treatment. Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police, Harssh Poddar, confirmed that an investigation was underway to identify the attackers.
The attack has sparked strong reactions from political leaders. Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat condemned the incident, calling it a "fatal attack" and stating that it highlighted the breakdown of law and order in the state. Thorat urged the police to immediately apprehend those responsible and called for intervention from the Election Commission to ensure peaceful elections.
The attack occurred on the final day of campaigning for the Maharashtra assembly elections, with Deshmukh's son, Salil Deshmukh, contesting the Katol seat on an NCP ticket against BJP candidate Charansingh Thakur.
