Veteran singer Asha Bhosle recently shared her concerns regarding the increasing divorce rates among the younger generation. In a conversation with spiritual leader Ravi Shankar, she questioned why young couples seem to fall out of love and grow bored with one another so easily these days.
Reflecting on her own experiences, the 91-year-old singer recalled that when she faced issues with her late husband, RD Burman, her reaction was to spend a few days at her mother's house rather than consider divorce. “I never divorced my husband,” she emphasized. She noted, “Nowadays, I hear about couples sending divorce papers every month. Why is this happening, Gurudev?”
In response, Ravi Shankar attributed the trend to a decline in people's tolerance levels, highlighting that Asha’s dedication to her music and faith in God helped her navigate challenges in her marriage. Asha added, "I have spent most of my years in the film industry and seen many people, but earlier, they never used to take such drastic steps like the current generation does. I feel that the love between them ends very soon, and they get bored with each other quickly too."
While Asha has expressed concern over modern relationships, she also shared her personal history. She divorced her first husband, Ganpatrao Bhosle, in 1960 after marrying him at 16 against her family’s wishes. Later, she married music composer RD Burman in 1980, with whom she shared a lasting relationship until his passing in 1994.
During the discussion, Asha also addressed women's rights regarding pregnancy. She noted, "Nowadays, women think childbearing is a burden. It’s perhaps a reality in the lower strata of society, but even in the middle and higher classes." Asha shared her own experience of balancing motherhood with her career, stating, "I started working as a playback singer at the age of 10. During this time, I had three children, raised them, married them off, and now have grandchildren... I executed all the responsibilities successfully and single-handedly, without my husband."
Ravi Shankar commended Asha as an "ideal" example for today’s women, acknowledging her remarkable achievements in both her personal and professional life.
With a prolific career spanning over 12,000 songs, Asha Bhosle is known for her diverse musical repertoire, ranging from upbeat numbers like "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja" to soulful ghazals such as "Dil Cheez Kya Hai."
