Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made serious allegations against Congress leader and MP Gaurav Gogoi, claiming that a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) has uncovered troubling links involving foreign entities.
According to Sarma, the SIT began its inquiry in early 2025 and examined financial, travel, and professional records connected to Gogoi’s family. The Chief Minister alleged that Gogoi’s British wife, Elizabeth, was associated with an organisation named LEAD Pakistan and received more than ₹82 lakh in funding traced back to Pakistani sources while residing in India.
Sarma further claimed that confidential analytical reports were shared with foreign stakeholders, allegedly offering strategic recommendations that could benefit Pakistani interests. He also pointed to Gogoi’s alleged undisclosed visit to Pakistan in 2013 and raised concerns over parliamentary questions asked by the MP on topics deemed sensitive to national security.
Additionally, the Chief Minister asserted that Gogoi may have failed to fully disclose details related to family citizenship status and overseas bank accounts in election affidavits.
In response, Gogoi strongly rejected the accusations, describing them as politically motivated and dismissing the claims as baseless. He countered by accusing Sarma of deflecting attention from alleged issues linked to the Chief Minister’s own family.
The matter is now expected to be reviewed by central investigative agencies, with political tensions rising in Assam ahead of upcoming elections. The controversy has further intensified the rivalry between the ruling BJP and the Congress in the state.
