Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday delivered a landmark speech at the Knesset, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to address Israel’s Parliament. In his remarks, he underscored India’s firm support for Israel in confronting terrorism and linked the October 2023 Hamas assault with the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
Referring to the Hamas attack that claimed roughly 1,200 lives, Modi compared it to the 26/11 strikes in Mumbai, where around 175 people were killed. He said India understands Israel’s anguish, stressing that both nations have endured the trauma of terror.
“India stands with Israel — resolutely and without hesitation — in this difficult hour and in the future,” Modi said, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.
Shared Sacrifice and History
The Prime Minister also recalled India’s historic military contribution to the region. During the First World War, over 4,000 Indian soldiers lost their lives in West Asia. He highlighted the 1918 Battle of Haifa as a notable episode in military history, symbolising India’s longstanding connection to the land.
Before Modi’s address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described India–Israel relations as a powerful strategic partnership, calling it a force multiplier in terms of spirit, capability and action.
Netanyahu also referenced the deep civilisational roots of both countries, drawing comparisons between the Indus Valley and the Jordan Valley to illustrate shared ancient heritage.
Joining a Distinguished List
With his speech at the Knesset, Modi joins a select group of global leaders who have addressed the Israeli Parliament. Among them are former US President Donald Trump, late Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and Argentine President Javier Milei.
The address is being seen as a defining moment in India–Israel relations, reinforcing counter-terror cooperation while celebrating historical and cultural bonds between the two democracies.
