Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of high-quality, unbiased datasets in the development of reliable and transparent artificial intelligence (AI) systems while speaking at the AI Action Summit in Paris. The event was co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and brought together global leaders, tech experts, and policymakers to discuss AI’s transformative potential and the need for ethical development.

Highlighting AI’s impact on society, the economy, and security, PM Modi called for a collaborative global approach to ensure inclusive technological governance and equitable access to AI advancements.

"AI has the power to improve countless lives by revolutionizing healthcare, education, agriculture, and more. It can accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goals. To achieve this, we must prioritize open-source systems that foster trust and transparency," he said.

Addressing AI Bias and Ethical Challenges

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to eliminate biases in AI training data to ensure fair and accurate outcomes. "We must build high-quality datasets that are free from biases. Democratizing technology and creating people-centric applications is essential. At the same time, we must tackle challenges like cybersecurity threats, misinformation, and deep fakes," he stated.

Data bias in AI arises when training datasets do not adequately represent diverse real-world scenarios, often leading to unfair or inaccurate results. These biases can reinforce stereotypes and historical inequalities. For instance, AI image searches have been found to predominantly feature white men in high-income job roles, while some AI models have shown less accuracy in responding to health-related queries concerning the black population.

Providing a simple yet telling example, PM Modi noted how AI platforms might generate an image of a right-handed writer when prompted for a left-handed one, simply because right-handed samples dominate the training data. "This demonstrates AI's immense potential but also highlights the biases that require careful consideration," he remarked.

Call for Global Cooperation in AI Governance

With AI evolving at an unprecedented pace and being adopted rapidly across borders, PM Modi stressed the necessity of global cooperation to establish ethical guidelines and regulatory standards. "AI's growth is deeply interconnected across nations. We must work collectively to develop governance frameworks that align with our shared values, mitigate risks, and build public trust," he urged.

The AI Action Summit provided a platform for discussions on responsible AI development, ensuring that emerging technologies serve humanity equitably while addressing critical ethical concerns.
