Atishi Assumes Office as Delhi Chief Minister Today
AAP leader Atishi officially took charge as Delhi's Chief Minister, becoming the youngest to hold the position and emphasizing the need to reinstate Arvind Kejriwal
23-09-2024AAP leader Atishi officially took charge as the Chief Minister of Delhi today, following her swearing-in ceremony on Saturday. She becomes the eighth Chief Minister of the capital and only the third woman to hold the position, following Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj.
Atishi’s appointment came after Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation due to an interim bail order from the Supreme Court related to the excise policy case. She has retained 13 portfolios from the previous administration, including education, revenue, finance, power, and public works, while Mukesh Ahlawat joined the cabinet as a new minister, taking charge of labor, SC/ST affairs, employment, and land and building departments. Gopal Rai continues to oversee his previous portfolios.
In her inaugural speech, Atishi expressed gratitude to Arvind Kejriwal, stating, “Today marks an emotional moment as he is not the Chief Minister. Arvind Kejriwal has transformed the lives of Delhi's residents, and we must work together to bring him back as Chief Minister.”
A touching moment was captured on video showing Atishi touching Kejriwal's feet after taking her oath. At 43, she is the youngest person to be sworn in as Chief Minister of Delhi and is currently one of only two female chief ministers in India, alongside West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee. Her term is expected to be short, with Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 2025.
