In a groundbreaking collaboration between aerospace and high fashion, Axiom Space and Prada have revealed the design of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit for NASA's upcoming Artemis-III lunar mission. The unveiling took place at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, Italy.
The AxEMU marks a new chapter in spacesuit design, combining Axiom's engineering with Prada's expertise in materials and craftsmanship. Axiom Space President Matt Ondler described the partnership as a "new foundational model for cross-industry collaboration."
The spacesuit, designed for the lunar surface, will be white to reflect heat and protect astronauts from extreme temperatures and lunar dust. Prada's contributions include high-performance materials and advanced sewing techniques. Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada's Chief Marketing Officer, expressed pride in the brand's role in enhancing the suit's functionality and design.
Featuring enhanced flexibility and safety, the AxEMU is designed to accommodate a diverse crew and endure the harsh conditions of the lunar south pole. It includes multiple redundant systems, onboard diagnostics, and a regenerable carbon dioxide scrubbing system.
The AxEMU has undergone extensive testing, including pressurised and underwater simulations. Further trials are planned as the suit approaches its final development stages, with a critical design review scheduled for 2025, as NASA prepares for its return to the Moon.
