A Thai woman delivered a baby onboard an Air India Express flight from Muscat to Mumbai, with help from the cabin crew and an onboard nurse
24-07-2025A unique and heartwarming incident occurred aboard an Air India Express flight from Muscat to Mumbai when a Thai national unexpectedly went into labour mid-flight and delivered a baby with the help of the airline crew and a fellow passenger who was a nurse.
According to a statement by the airline, the crew—specially trained to handle in-flight medical situations—swiftly stepped in to manage the delivery. With the nurse’s assistance, they ensured the birth took place safely and calmly at cruising altitude.
Once the situation unfolded, the pilots informed Air Traffic Control and requested priority landing clearance in Mumbai. The flight was given immediate clearance to land, enabling quick medical support for both mother and child on arrival.
On touchdown, a medical team met the aircraft and the mother and newborn were swiftly transferred to a nearby hospital for further care. An airline staff member accompanied them to ensure they received all necessary assistance.
Air India Express commended its crew’s professionalism and empathy during the emergency, stating, “This remarkable moment reflects the commitment, compassion, and coordination of everyone involved, from the cabin and cockpit to the ground support teams.”
The airline also confirmed that it is working with the Consulate General of Thailand in Mumbai to support the mother’s return journey home.
