Bangladesh Interim Government Warns Awami League Against Planned Dhaka Protest
The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has cautioned the Awami League against holding a protest rally in Dhaka, threatening strict action
10-11-2024About three months after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh following large-scale anti-government protests in August, the Awami League announced plans for a protest rally in Dhaka on Sunday. However, the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, issued a stern warning to the Awami League, prohibiting demonstrations.
"The Awami League in its present state is a fascist entity. We will not allow such a party to organize protests in Bangladesh," said Shafiqul Alam, spokesperson for Yunus, in a statement on Saturday.
Alam added that anyone attempting to gather, march, or hold public rallies would face strict action from law enforcement agencies. "The interim administration will not tolerate any disruptions to peace or any breach of law and order in the country," he emphasized.
This warning follows the interim government's decision last month to ban the Awami League's student branch, the Chatra League.
In response, the Awami League issued a statement declaring, "Our protest aims to reclaim the people’s rights, combat the rise of fundamentalist elements, and resist efforts to destabilize the lives of ordinary citizens. We call upon all Awami League members and supporters to unite against the misrule of the current regime."
