A diplomatic episode between India and Bangladesh has drawn attention after Zahed Ur Rahman, a senior policy adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was temporarily stopped by immigration authorities upon arriving at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Although Indian officials later cleared him for entry, Rahman chose not to continue his visit and instead returned to Bangladesh through Colombo.

The incident prompted Bangladesh to summon India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka, with senior Bangladeshi officials expressing dissatisfaction over the treatment of the visiting adviser. Dhaka described the development as unexpected and regrettable, particularly given that Indian authorities had been informed in advance about Rahman’s official visit.

Rahman had travelled to India to participate in a meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), hosted by India’s Ministry of External Affairs. According to reports from Bangladesh, the adviser was held for several hours during immigration checks before higher-level intervention reportedly led to clearance being granted.

Despite receiving permission to enter the country, Rahman decided not to proceed with the trip and boarded a return journey to Dhaka. Media reports suggested that his name may have appeared during a routine security verification process, although Indian authorities have not publicly commented on the matter.

The episode comes at a sensitive moment in India-Bangladesh relations following the formation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government earlier this year. Observers have closely monitored diplomatic interactions between New Delhi and the new administration in Dhaka, particularly after a period of political transition in Bangladesh.

Rahman is considered a key figure within the current Bangladeshi government. A medical professional and political commentator by background, he has been involved in policy discussions on governance, democratic reforms and human rights. He is also regarded as a trusted associate of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The incident has generated discussion among diplomatic observers, with some viewing it as a reflection of evolving dynamics between the two neighbouring countries. However, the fact that entry clearance was eventually granted suggests the matter may have been resolved administratively, even though the adviser ultimately declined to continue his visit.

India had earlier signalled its willingness to engage with Bangladesh’s new leadership. Following the BNP government’s formation, New Delhi extended invitations and maintained diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Despite the controversy, analysts believe both nations are likely to continue working together on key areas such as trade, connectivity, maritime cooperation, energy security and regional stability. Nevertheless, the airport incident is expected to remain under scrutiny as policymakers in both capitals assess its broader diplomatic implications.
