Bangladesh’s interim government is determined to bring deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back to face justice and is placing the responsibility on India to decide whether to extradite her. Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain stated on Sunday that if Bangladesh’s legal system demands Hasina’s return, efforts will be made to ensure she is brought back.
“The legal processes and agreements with India are in place, and it’s best not to speculate further,” Hossain told reporters. He added that inquiries about Hasina’s current location in India should be directed to Indian authorities.
Bangladesh has revoked Hasina and her family’s diplomatic passports, raising questions about her stay in India and potential extradition. The former Prime Minister fled Bangladesh amid a student-led uprising last month, and her entry into India was granted on short notice, according to Indian Ministry of External Affairs officials.
Hossain also addressed questions about agreements with India, suggesting that such Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are not legally binding and can be reviewed in the national interest. He confirmed that the interim government’s chief adviser, Muhammad Yunus, will attend the 79th UN General Assembly session later this month.
