Traveling to and from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), located approximately 40 kilometers from Bengaluru's central business district (CBD), may soon become significantly more convenient. Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates KIA, has partnered with Sarla Aviation to explore innovative and sustainable air mobility solutions.

BIAL announced on X (formerly Twitter), “This partnership marks a new chapter in our commitment to Advanced Air Mobility solutions, developed right here in Karnataka.” The collaboration aims to pioneer operational models for seven-seater electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which could transform the accessibility of air travel. The initiative is focused not just on technological advancement but also on fostering a cleaner and faster future for urban mobility.

Sarla Aviation's website outlines its ambition to reshape urban transportation in some of the world's most congested cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune. The company aims to make aerial ride-sharing as affordable as current rides offered by services like Uber or Ola, thus opening up efficient transportation options for a wide range of users.

For instance, the proposed route from Bengaluru Airport to Electronics City is expected to take only 19 minutes, with an estimated fare of ₹1,700. In comparison, premium taxi services currently take about 152 minutes for the same distance, costing around ₹2,500.

Adrian Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation, shared on LinkedIn, “I am proud to announce our partnership with Bangalore International Airport Ltd, marking a significant step in addressing Bengaluru’s congestion challenges.” He emphasized that the new electric flying taxis could reduce the travel time from Indiranagar to the airport from 1.5 hours to just 5 minutes.

While the potential benefits are promising, a BIAL source indicated that eVTOL operations could be two to three years away from commencement. This timeframe allows for the maturation of the eVTOL ecosystem, including necessary regulatory approvals and the development of a prototype.

Previous attempts to launch intracity heli-taxi services by Thumby Aviation and Blade India, which connected KIA with HAL and Electronics City, were suspended due to low patronage. However, eVTOL aircraft promise several advantages over traditional helicopters, particularly due to their electric propulsion systems. These aircraft are expected to be cleaner, quieter, and more cost-effective, making them a viable option for urban air mobility.

In recent developments, California-based Archer signed a memorandum of understanding with InterGlobe Enterprises to introduce electric air taxis in India by 2026, contingent upon regulatory approvals. Last month, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued an advisory outlining baseline airworthiness criteria for certifying VTOL aircraft, further paving the way for innovations in air travel.
