BJP Moves to Seek Rahul Gandhi’s Disqualification After Parliament Speech
The BJP has initiated steps to end Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary membership following remarks on the India–US trade deal and the Union Budget
12-02-2026The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has submitted a notice seeking the termination of Rahul Gandhi’s membership in Parliament, although it has clarified that it will not pursue a privilege motion against him. The development follows Gandhi’s recent address in the House, where he criticised aspects of the India–US trade agreement and raised concerns about the Union Budget.
During his speech on Wednesday, the Congress leader touched on global political tensions, artificial intelligence, and economic ties with the United States. His remarks came amid sustained protests by Opposition members, who had earlier objected to restrictions on his speaking time after he referenced former Army Chief General MM Naravane’s forthcoming memoir.
Opposition lawmakers are expected to continue demonstrations on Thursday, highlighting what they describe as “anti-people provisions” in the trade agreement and expressing support for protesting farmers gathered near the Makar Dwar entrance.
Meanwhile, Parliament’s Budget Session, which began on January 28, is scheduled to run for 30 sittings across 65 days, concluding on April 2. Both Houses will take a mid-session break starting February 13 and will resume on March 9, allowing Standing Committees time to review ministries’ Demands for Grants.
