BJP Names Nainar Nagendran as Tamil Nadu Chief, Rekindles Alliance with AIADMK
Nainar Nagendran takes over as BJP's Tamil Nadu President, as the party renews ties with AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections
12-04-2025The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Nainar Nagendran as the new President of its Tamil Nadu unit, replacing K Annamalai. A seasoned politician and three-time MLA from Tirunelveli, Nagendran now faces the task of energizing the party ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in a state that has largely remained resistant to the BJP’s political ideology.
Nagendran's elevation coincides with the party rekindling its alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), a move that could potentially ease his political challenges. Notably, Nagendran was once a member of the AIADMK and had previously secured Assembly victories under its banner in 2001 and 2011 before joining the BJP.
There has been considerable speculation that the AIADMK’s return to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) hinged on Annamalai’s exit as BJP’s Tamil Nadu head. His strained ties with the AIADMK, marked by public criticism of the party and its revered leaders like J Jayalalithaa and MG Ramachandran, were seen as major stumbling blocks in reviving the alliance.
While Annamalai has been removed from the state leadership role, BJP insiders suggest the move is not a demotion but part of a broader strategy. The party is expected to assure him of a future role either at the central level or in the party's national leadership, highlighting his contributions in building the BJP’s base in Tamil Nadu.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who officially announced the alliance with AIADMK, acknowledged Annamalai’s role in the party’s southern growth, describing his achievements as "commendable" in a post on X.
Shah also dismissed concerns that the renewed partnership with the AIADMK could be detrimental to the BJP. He emphasized that the alliance was re-formed without any preconditions and assured that the BJP would not interfere in the AIADMK's internal affairs. "This partnership will benefit both the NDA and AIADMK," he said.
Previously, the BJP and AIADMK joined forces for the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 Assembly elections but faced disappointing results. The BJP failed to win any seats in 2019, while the AIADMK secured only one out of 39. In the 2021 Assembly polls, the DMK-led coalition swept the state, winning 159 out of 234 seats.
Following increasing tensions — particularly due to Annamalai’s persistent criticisms — the two parties parted ways in 2023. However, that separation proved politically costly as both sides failed to win any seats in the 2024 general elections.
Nagendran’s appointment and the re-forging of ties with the AIADMK appear to signal a course correction by the BJP, as it seeks to reposition itself within Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian-dominated political landscape ahead of the next major electoral contest.
