The Bombay High Court has indicated it will cancel an FIR against actor Mamta Kulkarni in a high-profile drug haul case due to insufficient evidence. Although the court has yet to release a detailed order, it has signaled that Kulkarni’s request to dismiss the case will be granted.

Kulkarni, who gained fame in the 1990s, has claimed that the drug case significantly harmed her reputation and that she was unjustly used as a scapegoat. The bench, consisting of Justices Bharti Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande, found that the prosecution's case lacked substantive evidence beyond the initial allegations in the FIR.

Case Overview

The case dates back to April 12, 2016, when Thane Police intercepted two cars carrying 2-3 kg of Ephedrine, a controlled substance under the Narcotics Act. The drivers, Mayur and Sagar, were arrested, and the consignment, valued over Rs 80 lakh, was found with fake identity cards from a pharmaceutical company.

During the investigation, ten people were arrested, and seven, including Kulkarni, were listed as wanted. The police alleged that Kulkarni attended a meeting in Kenya with one of the accused, Vicky Goswami, in January 2016. This meeting, according to the police, was part of a conspiracy to transport Ephedrine from Maharashtra to Kenya to manufacture Methamphetamine for global distribution.

Kulkarni’s defense, represented by Advocate Madhav Thorat, contended that the accusations were based solely on statements from co-accused individuals and lacked direct evidence. Thorat argued that there were no financial transactions linking Kulkarni to the alleged conspiracy and criticized the reliance on inadmissible and hearsay evidence.
