Brampton Man Arrested After Pro-Khalistani Attack on Hindu Devotees at Temple
Canadian authorities arrested a man for assault following a pro-Khalistani mob's attack on Hindu devotees outside a Brampton temple
10-11-2024Canadian authorities have detained a 35-year-old man, identified as Inderjeet Gosal of Brampton, in connection with last week’s violent pro-Khalistani demonstration targeting Hindu devotees at Brampton’s Hindu Sabha Mandir, police announced on Sunday. Gosal faces charges of assault with a weapon following the November 4 protest outside the temple, according to the Peel Region Police.
The arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in relation to the incident to four, with Gosal's arrest occurring on November 8. Authorities reported that Gosal has been released on specific conditions and is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court in Brampton on a forthcoming date.
The violence erupted during a pro-Khalistani gathering commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1984 Sikh riots. As tensions escalated, some demonstrators attacked Hindu devotees. The incident prompted a strong response from Indian leaders, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemning the attack as a "cowardly attempt" to intimidate Indian diplomats. International condemnation quickly followed.
Police indicated that such complex investigations require time, explaining that arrests are made progressively as suspects are identified. The Peel Region Police have also established a Strategic Investigative Team to handle cases stemming from the events of November 3 and 4, analyzing extensive video footage to identify further suspects, with additional arrests anticipated.
The incident sparked widespread protests involving both Hindu and Sikh communities, which extended from Brampton to other areas, including Mississauga, drawing hundreds of participants. Additionally, Canadian police officer Harinder Sohi was suspended after he was filmed carrying a Khalistan flag at a pro-Khalistani demonstration, where protesters were chanting slogans critical of India.
