British Hindus Disappointed by Meat and Alcohol at Diwali Celebration Hosted by PM Starmer
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces criticism from British Hindus after serving meat and alcohol at a Diwali event at 10 Downing Street
10-11-2024UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Diwali celebration at 10 Downing Street has stirred controversy, with some British Hindus expressing disappointment over the inclusion of meat and alcohol at the event. The Diwali gathering, attended by prominent community leaders and high-profile politicians, featured traditional aspects such as lighting diyas, a Kuchipudi dance performance, and a speech by Starmer. However, reports indicate that the menu included lamb kebabs, wine, and beer, which offended certain members of the Hindu community.
For over a decade, Diwali festivities at 10 Downing Street have reportedly excluded meat and alcohol. Satish K Sharma, a British Hindu pandit, criticized the decision, describing it as “a complete lack of sensitivity and consultation.” In a video shared on social media, Sharma stated, “It’s disappointing and surprising that this year’s Diwali at Downing Street included meat and alcohol. This is a significant misstep by the Prime Minister’s advisers.”
The community group Insight UK, which represents British Hindus and Indians, echoed these sentiments. In an online statement, the organization said that serving meat and alcohol “marred the sacred celebration” and offered its assistance to Downing Street officials on respecting religious traditions.
10 Downing Street has yet to respond to the community's concerns.
