BSNL Launches Re 1 Plan With Daily 2GB Data, Free SIM for New Users

BSNL’s Freedom Offer promises big benefits at just Re 1 — but only for new subscribers this Independence Month

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced a new prepaid plan aimed at first-time subscribers, offering a compelling deal for just Re 1. As part of its “Freedom Offer” celebrating Independence Day, BSNL is giving new customers 2GB of 4G data per day, unlimited voice calls, 100 SMS per day, and a free 4G SIM — all valid for 30 days.

This limited-period plan is available from August 1 to August 31 and can be activated by visiting any BSNL retailer or Common Services Centre (CSC) across India. While the plan appears highly competitive — especially when similar offerings from rival operators come at a much higher cost — it comes with one major restriction: only new users are eligible. Existing BSNL subscribers won’t be able to avail themselves of this offer.

After the daily data cap of 2GB is reached, speeds will be throttled to 40kbps, following BSNL’s fair usage policy. The plan also includes unlimited calling across all networks and 100 SMS messages per day, making it a complete starter pack for those switching to BSNL.

However, it remains unclear whether customers ordering SIMs through BSNL’s doorstep delivery service — where SIMs can be ordered online — will be able to activate the Re 1 offer. For now, visiting a physical store or CSC is the recommended way to ensure eligibility.

The move comes as BSNL looks to counter a decline in its subscriber base, as noted in recent Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. This low-cost plan is seen as part of the company’s strategy to regain market share and attract new users in a highly competitive telecom landscape.
