In a strong show of unity, over a thousand Canadian Hindus gathered outside the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton on Monday night, organized by the Coalition of Hindus in North America (CoHNA). The rally followed an attack on the temple by pro-Khalistani demonstrators just a day prior, amid Diwali celebrations.

CoHNA expressed its concern on social media, highlighting that Hindu temples across Canada had been targeted, calling on Canadian authorities to address what they termed "Hinduphobia." Marchers carried Canadian and Indian flags, as well as banners with “Jai Shri Ram,” while some chanted slogans opposing the Khalistani movement.

Many participants voiced their frustration, stating that Hindu Canadians have experienced discrimination for years. One attendee emphasized the community’s loyalty to Canada and urged political leaders to take action, saying, "We want Canada to treat Hindus well and strengthen ties with India."

The march took place in response to an incident on Sunday when a group displaying Khalistani flags reportedly clashed with temple devotees. Viral videos on social media showed the protesters holding pro-Khalistan signs, leading to arrests. Peel Regional Police confirmed that three individuals had been detained for charges including assault with a weapon and assaulting a police officer.

Both Indian and Canadian leaders condemned the incident. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Canadian government to uphold justice and law, stating that these actions would not undermine India's resolve. This was Modi’s first public remark on the ongoing tensions with pro-Khalistani groups in Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also denounced the attack, reiterating that all Canadians have the right to practice their faith safely. However, Trudeau faced criticism for not specifically addressing “Khalistani extremism.”

The incident has further intensified already strained relations between India and Canada. Diplomatic tensions escalated in September 2023, when Trudeau alleged a link between Indian government agents and the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani activist deemed a terrorist by India. Despite calls from India, Canada has been criticized for not taking action against Khalistani activities, including pro-Khalistan referendums organized on Canadian soil.
