Car Ramming in China’s Zhuhai Leaves 35 Dead, 43 Injured in 'Vicious Attack'

12-11-2024Thirty-five people lost their lives, and 43 were injured when a car rammed into pedestrians on Monday evening in Zhuhai, a city in southern China, police reported on Tuesday.
Initial reports only mentioned injuries, and videos of the incident were reportedly removed from social media. However, on Tuesday, police confirmed it as a “serious and vicious attack” at the Zhuhai Sports Centre, revealing a death toll of 35.
The incident involved a 62-year-old driver, identified by the surname Fan, who allegedly drove an SUV through the entrance of the sports centre, hitting individuals exercising on its internal roads, according to the police statement.
Authorities found Fan in his car attempting self-harm with a knife. They intervened and transported him to the hospital. Currently, he remains in a coma due to self-inflicted injuries to his neck and other areas, making interrogation impossible for the time being, police said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for urgent medical care for the wounded and demanded that the suspect be dealt with "according to the law," the official Xinhua news agency reported.
The incident comes as Zhuhai hosts China’s largest airshow, showcasing both civil and military aerospace advancements.
