The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has formally charged Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual staff member of the Kolkata Police, in connection with the rape and murder of a woman doctor who was on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI, which completed its investigation within two months, is set to file the charge sheet in the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Sealdah this afternoon.
According to sources within the agency, the charge sheet lists Roy as the primary suspect and includes the testimonies of around 200 individuals. Investigators are still looking into the possibility that more suspects may have been involved, raising concerns that this could have been a gang rape.
The victim's body was discovered at the hospital on August 9, revealing the extent of the brutality she had suffered. Following public outcry and widespread protests across the country, the court directed the CBI to take over the investigation.
Roy, a frequent visitor to the hospital, was initially arrested by Kolkata Police the day after the crime. He was handed over to the CBI, along with other crucial evidence, once the agency took charge of the case.
Meanwhile, the victim's colleagues, who have been protesting for the last two months, have escalated their demands for justice by launching a hunger strike. They are also calling for enhanced security measures for medical professionals to prevent such tragedies in the future.
