A designated CBI court has denied bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, citing the severe nature of the allegations against him, which could potentially lead to capital punishment if proven. Ghosh, along with Abhijit Mondal, the former officer in charge of Tala police station, was arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence and delaying the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run hospital on August 9.
In a ruling issued on September 25, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate S. Dey noted that the investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is ongoing and highlighted the gravity of the charges. He emphasized that releasing Ghosh on bail would be unjust given the potential consequences of the accusations. The judge remarked that the presence of co-accused at the crime scene is not a prerequisite for an individual to be implicated in an offense.
The court also dismissed Mondal's bail request and approved the CBI's request for judicial custody of both suspects until September 30. Ghosh's defense attorney argued that his client had been falsely accused and had no involvement in the alleged crime. The body of the postgraduate trainee was discovered with severe injuries in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital.
