The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed a special court on Wednesday that records related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College were "falsely created" and "altered" at the Tala Police Station. The CBI made this claim while seeking judicial custody for Tala Police Station officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, and former RG Kar principal, Sandip Ghosh.
During the court hearing, the CBI stated that interrogation of the two accused had revealed additional information, indicating the creation or alteration of false records at the police station. The agency further mentioned that it had seized CCTV footage from the police station, which has been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Kolkata for analysis.
The CBI counsel explained that the investigation is ongoing and that the process of gathering evidence, including data from mobile phones and CCTV footage, is time-consuming. The agency, therefore, requested judicial custody for the accused until September 30 to continue its investigation.
The Sealdah court granted the CBI's request, sending both Mondal and Ghosh to judicial custody until the specified date. Mondal was arrested by the CBI on September 14, while Ghosh, already in judicial custody for a separate corruption case, was taken into CBI custody on September 15 following a court order.
The case stems from the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The prime suspect, Sanjay Roy, was arrested by Kolkata Police the day after the incident.
