In an unexpected crackdown, Bengaluru’s Central Crime Branch (CCB) conducted a raid at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison on Monday, uncovering a trove of contraband items within the high-security facility.

Officials found various banned items during the operation, including equipment used for consuming marijuana, tobacco products, sharp objects like knives, scissors, and blades, along with Rs 16,180 in cash. These items were seized from inmates during the extensive search, which lasted from morning until noon.

City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh confirmed the discoveries and noted that preliminary findings indicate that certain jail staff were complicit in smuggling the prohibited items inside. A detailed investigation is now underway.

Parappana Agrahara prison has faced criticism in the past over security and management lapses. In August of the previous year, the facility drew national attention after a viral image showed Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, then in custody for his alleged involvement in the Renukaswamy murder case, seemingly enjoying privileged treatment inside the jail. The photo showed him lounging outdoors with other inmates, holding what appeared to be a beverage and a cigarette.

The image sparked public outrage, leading the Karnataka government to suspend nine prison staff members. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged the security breach, announcing that seven officers were initially suspended and that further action, including transfers of senior jail officials, would follow. He also instructed the Home Minister to review the situation and ensure accountability.

In the aftermath of the controversy, a Bengaluru court ordered that Darshan and his co-accused be relocated to separate jails across the state. Darshan has since been released on bail.
