Raghav Chadha has been assigned Z-category security by the Union government after a fresh evaluation of potential risks, officials familiar with the matter said. The upgraded protection will be operational in both Delhi and Punjab, with central paramilitary personnel designated for his security detail.
Until the new arrangement is fully implemented, the Delhi Police has been directed to provide immediate interim protection, sources indicated.
The move follows a threat analysis conducted by the Intelligence Bureau, which reportedly advised enhanced safeguards. The Centre’s decision comes shortly after the Punjab government withdrew Chadha’s earlier Z+ security cover that had been provided by the state police.
The timing of the withdrawal has attracted attention, particularly as it coincides with visible strains between Chadha and the leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party. Chadha, who represents Punjab in the Rajya Sabha, had been under Z+ protection arranged by the state administration until last week.
Tensions Within Party Ranks
The change in security status comes amid escalating internal discord. Chadha was recently removed from his position as deputy leader of AAP in the Rajya Sabha, a development that further underscored the widening divide.
Responding publicly, Chadha remarked that he had been “silenced, not defeated,” suggesting dissatisfaction with the party’s decision.
Certain party leaders have criticised him for allegedly failing to forcefully articulate Punjab-related concerns in Parliament. They have also claimed that he did not fully align with opposition strategies such as coordinated walkouts or signing notices targeting constitutional authorities.
Chadha Pushes Back
Chadha has dismissed the accusations as baseless. He maintains that his parliamentary approach emphasises meaningful debate and issue-based interventions rather than disruption. According to him, his legislative contributions reflect his commitment to raising matters affecting the public.
Social Media Signals
In recent days, Chadha has amplified his defence through social media posts, sharing video compilations of his speeches in Parliament under the title “Voice Raised Price Paid.” In another message, he said he prefers to let his work speak on his behalf.
Adding to speculation about his political trajectory, Chadha commented “interesting thought” on a video proposing that he consider forming a new political outfit. The remark has fuelled chatter about his future within the party.
He also posted an image alluding to the phrase “Never Outshine the Master,” widely interpreted as a subtle reference to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.
The sequence of events — withdrawal of state-level protection followed swiftly by central security cover — highlights not only evolving security considerations but also the complex political undercurrents surrounding Chadha’s standing within the party.
