Centre Opposes Scrapping NEET-UG Exam, Cites Fairness for Honest Candidates
The Central Government has opposed cancelling the NEET-UG exam, emphasizing the need to protect honest candidates and maintain examination integrity
05-07-2024The Central Government has opposed the cancellation of the NEET-UG exam in an affidavit to the Supreme Court, arguing that such an action would harm the interests of numerous honest candidates. The government stressed that the majority of students who took the exam fairly should not be penalized.
"Without evidence of any large-scale confidentiality breach in a nationwide exam, it would be irrational to scrap the entire examination," the affidavit stated.
The NEET-UG 2024 exam for undergraduate medical programs, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), faced controversy due to reports of question paper leaks in some states and the awarding of grace marks to 1,500 students, which sparked widespread protests. The grace marks were subsequently retracted, and a re-test was administered.
The Centre's affidavit mentioned that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is thoroughly investigating the alleged irregularities. The government affirmed its commitment to ensuring fair and transparent conduct of all exams.
The Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, which prescribes stringent punishments for exam-related offences, is already in force, the government noted. "The government is dedicated to maintaining the integrity of examinations and safeguarding student interests," the affidavit emphasized.
A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is set to hear petitions seeking a re-test on July 8.
The government also highlighted that the Ministry of Education has formed a committee of experts, headed by former ISRO chairperson Dr. K Radhakrishnan, to recommend effective measures for conducting transparent and fair exams by the National Testing Agency. The committee will propose reforms to improve data security protocols and enhance the structure and functioning of the NTA.
