Amid rumors of his possible shift to the BJP, former Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren expressed deep disappointment on Sunday, revealing that he felt "pained" by his party's actions when his scheduled programs were abruptly canceled just days before he was asked to step down as Chief Minister.
In a heartfelt post on X, written in Hindi, Champai Soren described how he felt "broken from within" for the first time in his over four-decade-long political career. He recounted how he discovered on Hul Diwas, June 30, that his programs had been canceled for the next two days by the party leadership. He learned that a meeting of MLAs and leaders from the INDIA bloc was scheduled for July 3, where he was instructed not to attend any programs.
"Is there anything more humiliating in a democracy than having a Chief Minister's programs canceled by someone else?" he questioned.
The 67-year-old JMM leader had taken over as Chief Minister after Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in connection with an alleged land scam. Champai Soren stepped down from the role on July 3 after Hemant Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court.
Reflecting on the situation, Champai Soren said, "I was broken from within. I didn’t know what to do. For two days, I sat quietly, introspecting and searching for my mistake in the entire incident. I had no greed for power, but who could I show this blow to my self-respect? Where could I express the pain inflicted by my own people?"
He shared that after being asked to resign as Chief Minister, he was left with three options: "First, to retire from politics, second, to form my own separate organization, and third, if I find a companion on this path, to continue the journey with them."
Hinting at his future plans, Champai Soren indicated that he might join another party before the Jharkhand Assembly elections. "From that day until now, and up until the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections, all options are open for me in this journey," he stated.
Soren also mentioned that he was not informed about the agenda of the meeting called by the MLAs and other INDIA bloc leaders after the Chief Minister's release from jail. "Although the Chief Minister has the right to call a meeting of the MLAs, I wasn't even told the agenda. During the meeting, I was asked to resign. I was surprised, but I had no greed for power, so I resigned immediately. However, it was a blow to my self-respect," he said.
He went on to express that he felt as if he had "no existence in the party" he had served his entire life, mentioning that several other "insulting events" occurred that he chose not to disclose.
"After facing so much insult and contempt, I was forced to look for an alternative path," Soren concluded in his post.
