On Monday, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud revealed that he has adopted a vegan lifestyle, inspired by his daughter’s advocacy for a "cruelty-free life." He shared that this change was motivated by his daughter’s request, which led him to re-evaluate his dietary and lifestyle choices.

Chandrachud stated that neither he nor his wife purchase silk or leather products anymore. "I have two specially-abled daughters who continuously inspire me. I recently became vegan because my daughter encouraged us to lead a cruelty-free life," he mentioned.

Explaining his transition, Chandrachud said he initially eliminated dairy, honey, and other animal products from his diet. However, his daughters encouraged him to extend this commitment to his wardrobe, avoiding silk and leather.

"We don't buy any new silk or leather products. Though we still have some old items, we consider this a first step towards a fully vegan lifestyle," he added.

Chandrachud made these remarks during the inauguration of a new Sagar Ratna restaurant outlet on the Delhi High Court campus, where the Digital Law Reports of the court were also launched. The restaurant will be operated by neurodiverse individuals.

Discussing the venture, the Chief Justice emphasized the importance of independent living for differently-abled individuals. "This collaboration with the Sagar and Shaurya foundation is a significant step towards empowerment. Everyone, especially those in wheelchairs, wants to navigate life independently," he said.

He highlighted the need to embrace neurodiversity, recognizing the unique personalities and challenges faced by neurodiverse individuals. "Every interaction with differently-abled persons reveals their tremendous potential," Chandrachud noted.

Responding to Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi’s suggestion, the Chief Justice committed to urging all High Courts to establish similar ventures. "I will write to High Courts tomorrow. Imagine the opportunities for dignified living and livelihoods we can create if every High Court and district court opens a cafeteria run by differently-abled individuals," he stated.

Acting Chief Justice Manmohan added that such initiatives promote inclusivity, societal integration, and confidence among differently-abled individuals.
