China and India Resolve Ladakh Border Standoff, Agreement Reached on Military Patrolling
China confirmed a resolution with India to end the Ladakh border standoff, with both nations agreeing to resume military patrolling
22-10-2024China confirmed on Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with India to resolve the military standoff between the two nations in eastern Ladakh. Beijing stated that "relevant matters" have been settled and expressed its commitment to working with New Delhi to implement these resolutions.
“Recently, China and India have maintained close communication through diplomatic and military channels on issues concerning the China-India border. Now both sides have reached a resolution on these matters, which China highly values,” said Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, during a press conference.
The spokesperson added that China will collaborate with India to ensure the implementation of the agreement.
This announcement follows the Indian government's statement on Monday that a deal has been reached regarding patrolling in eastern Ladakh, effectively ending a four-year military standoff that started after the Galwan clashes in 2020. The announcement came ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia for the BRICS summit, where he may potentially meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Regarding the possibility of such a meeting, Lin Jian remarked, “We will keep you informed if any developments arise.”
The agreement was reached after several rounds of negotiations in recent weeks, culminating in a resolution of the issues that escalated in 2020. Last month, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held discussions in St. Petersburg, Russia, focusing on a swift resolution to the dispute.
According to India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Indian and Chinese troops will now resume their pre-standoff patrolling along the border, and the disengagement process has been successfully completed.
