China has expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks advocating dialogue as the key to maintaining stable relations between India and China. Beijing described his statement as "positive" and reiterated its commitment to fostering cooperation, likening the partnership between the two nations to a coordinated "dragon-elephant dance."

Addressing the media, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted the recent progress in bilateral relations. "Over the past few months, both sides have actively worked to implement the key understandings reached by their leaders, expanding communication and collaboration at multiple levels, which has led to positive outcomes," she said.

Mao further asserted that mutual cooperation remains the best path forward for both nations. "China and India can achieve success together through partnership. Strengthening our collaboration is the only correct choice," she stated, adding that the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties offers an opportunity to deepen engagement in various areas.

In a podcast interview with American researcher and podcaster Lex Fridman, PM Modi reflected on India's relationship with China, acknowledging that disagreements between neighboring nations are inevitable. However, he stressed that open communication is essential to preventing disputes.

"The border incidents in 2020 created serious tensions, but following my recent discussions with President Xi, there has been a shift towards normalcy. Efforts are underway to restore pre-2020 conditions along the border," PM Modi said.

Tensions between the two nations escalated in 2020 following a deadly clash in the Galwan Valley. However, a major breakthrough was achieved in October 2023 when India and China reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Later that month, PM Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia, where they reaffirmed their commitment to resolving border issues and resuming diplomatic dialogue.

PM Modi acknowledged that resolving longstanding differences would take time but emphasised the importance of maintaining strong relations. "Disagreements are natural, but our focus is on dialogue. Through constructive discussions, we can build a stable and cooperative relationship that benefits both countries," he said.

Reflecting on the historical ties between India and China, the prime minister noted that both nations have coexisted peacefully for centuries. "India and China have a long history of cultural exchange and mutual learning. At one point, our combined economies accounted for nearly half of the world's GDP. This reflects the significant contributions both countries have made to global progress," he remarked.

PM Modi also acknowledged that rebuilding trust after the recent tensions would require patience. "The five-year gap in engagement has created challenges, but over time, we can restore confidence and enthusiasm in our bilateral relationship," he said.

China’s positive response to PM Modi’s remarks signals a renewed push for stability and cooperation, reinforcing the importance of diplomatic engagement in shaping the future of India-China relations.
