Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently hosted Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma at his official residence, Varsha Bungalow, in Mumbai to commend him on a remarkable Test career that concluded this month. The Chief Minister praised Rohit for his 14-year contribution to Indian cricket in the longest format of the game.
Fadnavis shared moments from the meeting on social media, posting photos and expressing admiration for the cricketer. “It was great to welcome, meet and interact with Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma at my official residence Varsha. I extended my best wishes to him on his retirement from Test cricket and for continued success in the next chapter of his journey!” he wrote.
On May 7, Rohit, now 38, made his retirement from Test cricket official through an Instagram story. While he had already stepped away from T20Is last year, he remains available for selection in the ODI format.
In his post, Rohit said: “Hello everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
The decision came after a challenging Test series in Australia, where he managed just 36 runs in three matches. He opted out of the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Rohit ends his Test journey with 67 matches under his belt, scoring 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57. He notched up 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 212 against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019.
As India gears up for a five-match Test series against England, the focus now shifts to selecting a new leader for the red-ball squad following Rohit’s exit from the format.
