A protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Jaipur on Monday took an unexpected turn when the party's founder, Abhijeet Dipke, was allegedly assaulted during the demonstration.
The gathering, held at Shaheed Smarak, was part of a nationwide campaign launched by the organisation to highlight concerns over examination paper leaks, education-related issues and rising unemployment. The movement had previously announced that similar protests would be conducted across multiple cities unless action was taken on its demands.
According to videos circulating on social media, Dipke was being carried by supporters during the event when an individual approached him and grabbed a cloth draped around his neck. Moments later, a confrontation broke out, and the activist was allegedly slapped and struck by at least two people.
The incident quickly escalated as supporters intervened and separated the individuals involved. The alleged attackers were reportedly confronted by members of the crowd before being moved away from the scene.
Following the episode, Dipke issued a statement on social media, asserting that the attack would not discourage his movement from continuing its campaign. Emphasising his commitment to non-violent activism, he said the organisation would continue to raise public issues through peaceful means.
He also described the assault as an attempt to intimidate dissenting voices and reiterated the group's demand for accountability regarding examination irregularities and broader concerns within the education sector.
Police officials confirmed that six individuals had been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the incident. Authorities said efforts were underway to determine the identities of those involved, establish the motive behind the confrontation and reconstruct the sequence of events.
Investigators are reviewing available footage and gathering statements from witnesses as part of the inquiry.
Officials also noted that permission for the protest had been granted under specific conditions, including limits on attendance and compliance with public order requirements.
The Cockroach Janta Party, which began as a satirical political initiative before evolving into an activist platform, has gained attention in recent months through demonstrations focused on examination scandals, youth employment and governance-related issues.
