As the recent spell of rain subsides, Delhi and surrounding regions are bracing for a significant drop in temperatures accompanied by very dense fog. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a cold wave that will persist through the New Year celebrations, impacting several northern and central states.

Temperature Plunge Across Regions

Minimum temperatures are expected to drop by 3-4°C in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan over the next three days before stabilising. Uttar Pradesh is forecasted to experience a sharper decline, with temperatures falling by 4-6°C over the next five days.

Central India is set to witness a decrease of 3-5°C after 24 hours of steady conditions, while eastern India may see a dip of 3-4°C over the coming three days. In Maharashtra, minimum temperatures are projected to drop by 2-4°C over the next five days.

Severe Cold Wave and Fog Warnings

The IMD has issued severe cold wave warnings for isolated areas in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan from December 30 to January 2. Additionally, cold day conditions are likely in parts of Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana on December 30.

Dense to very dense fog is expected during late-night and early-morning hours, further reducing visibility. Uttar Pradesh will also face dense fog on December 30, while Himachal Pradesh could remain foggy until January 1.

In the northeastern states, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, foggy conditions are forecasted to persist until January 2, urging residents and travellers to exercise caution.

As the cold wave approaches, residents in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe during this period of plunging temperatures and reduced visibility.
