Marriage in today’s world is evolving, with many couples redefining what partnership and commitment mean. Content creator and therapist Divija Bhasin recently shared her personal approach to marriage on Instagram, highlighting how she and her husband have chosen a lifestyle that reflects their values rather than societal expectations.

Divija explained that she does not wear a mangalsutra or sindoor, nor has she taken her husband’s surname. “I always tick Ms Divija instead of Mrs Divija when filling forms. My husband doesn’t follow these traditions either, so why should I? Instead, we both wear bracelets,” she said, adding that her identity remained unchanged after marriage. “I am still the same person. I wear what I want, do what I want, and I’m financially independent.”

She described how their marriage is built around shared responsibilities and mutual respect. The couple rents a house, has a cook to support their busy schedules, and values personal space while maintaining close ties with their families. “The only thing that changed for me is that I now get to have sleepovers with my boyfriend every night,” Divija joked.

Divija’s core message challenges conventional expectations placed on women after marriage. “Marriage does not have to be a negative experience where women change everything and men continue life as usual. Marriage can be equal. Society has shaped these norms, but I can change the rules for myself,” she said.

Her video sparked mixed reactions online. While many applauded her fresh perspective and emphasis on independence, others criticized her choices, arguing that traditional symbols like sindoor and mangalsutra hold cultural and spiritual significance. Some users highlighted financial independence as the key to making such choices, while others questioned societal norms around gender roles.

Divija’s viewpoint serves as a reminder that marriage can be flexible, equitable, and tailored to the couple’s beliefs, rather than strictly following tradition.
