Cristiano Ronaldo has once again weighed in on football’s greatest-ever-player debate, insisting that his achievements and scoring record make him the sport’s undisputed number one.

In an interview teaser released by CNN Portugal, the Portugal captain expressed frustration that his goals and performances were not receiving sufficient appreciation. His remarks come amid reports of disciplinary action by the Portuguese Football Federation following his departure from the national team camp after an alleged disagreement with manager Jorge Jesus.

“People aren’t appreciating my moments or my goals, you know?” Ronaldo said.

The forward also appeared to play down the importance of reaching specific scoring milestones, arguing that his standing in football history should be judged by his overall record rather than a particular number.

Whether his career tally reaches 920, 925 or 930 goals, Ronaldo maintained that his position at the top of the game was beyond question. He insisted that the numbers themselves supported his claim.

The 40-year-old also spoke about his approach to the future, saying he prefers to focus on the present rather than make long-term plans. He acknowledged that his motivation could change at any time and that he could one day wake up and decide he no longer wanted to play.

Ronaldo-Messi GOAT Debate Returns

Ronaldo’s comments have renewed the long-running discussion over his place alongside Lionel Messi, his principal rival for the title of football’s greatest player.

Messi strengthened his case by leading Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, adding the one major international trophy missing from his collection. Ronaldo, meanwhile, continues to build on a career distinguished by goalscoring records, longevity and success across multiple leagues.

Their international careers have recently attracted attention for different reasons. Messi received an emotional farewell from Argentina after bringing his international career to a close, while Ronaldo has found himself at the centre of a controversy involving Portugal.

Reports said Ronaldo was provisionally suspended after leaving the national team camp following a dispute with new manager Jorge Jesus over his role. The forward had reportedly been left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway, prompting the Portuguese Football Federation to begin disciplinary proceedings.

How Ronaldo And Messi Compare Statistically

Their career records offer arguments for both players, although the figures depend on the date of the comparison and the statistical source used.

Ronaldo has traditionally held the advantage in total career goals, international goals and UEFA Champions League scoring. Messi leads in Ballon d’Or awards and assists, while his World Cup triumph gives him a major advantage in international honours.

Ronaldo’s supporters point to his sustained scoring output, adaptability across different competitions and ability to perform in several footballing environments. Messi’s supporters highlight his playmaking, individual awards and success with Argentina on the world stage.

The debate ultimately depends on which qualities are considered most important: goalscoring and longevity, or a combination of creativity, individual recognition and team achievements.

Ronaldo, however, made clear in the interview that he sees little reason for uncertainty about his own standing.

Ronaldo’s History Of Candid Interviews

Ronaldo has previously used high-profile interviews to challenge how his career and performances have been portrayed.

In 2022, his interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan generated widespread controversy after he criticised Manchester United, questioned manager Erik ten Hag and expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s direction. United and Ronaldo subsequently ended their association by mutual agreement.

The latest comments shift the focus from his club career to the broader question of his legacy. Yet the underlying message remains similar: Ronaldo believes his achievements have not always received the recognition they warrant.

He has also addressed comparisons with Messi in earlier interviews. In a 2012 conversation with CNN, Ronaldo backed his own abilities while acknowledging that the repeated comparisons between the two players could become tiresome.

More than a decade later, the rivalry remains central to football’s GOAT debate. Ronaldo’s latest declaration suggests that he has no intention of leaving the question unanswered, even as fans and analysts continue to weigh the records, honours and playing styles of both legends.
