Andhra Pradesh On High Alert As Cyclone Arnab Nears Landfall
Coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh are preparing for severe weather conditions as Cyclone Arnab moves towards the eastern coastline, bringing the threat of destructive winds, torrential rainfall and widespread disruption.
According to the latest information provided, the cyclonic storm is projected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Yanam, along the stretch between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, during the early hours of Wednesday. Landfall is anticipated between 2 am and 4 am, with sustained wind speeds potentially reaching 135 kmph and gusts touching 150 kmph.
Over 84,000 Residents Shifted To Safety
With the approaching storm posing a significant risk to coastal communities, the Andhra Pradesh administration has intensified evacuation operations.
As many as 84,396 residents have already been relocated to 290 temporary relief centres across vulnerable districts. Emergency personnel are working to ensure that people living in low-lying areas and locations susceptible to flooding are moved to safer accommodation.
Across Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha, authorities have arranged nearly 4,000 shelters to accommodate those affected by the cyclone. Additional evacuations may be undertaken depending on the storm's movement and the severity of weather conditions.
Heavy Rainfall Raises Flooding Concerns
Intense rainfall has already affected several parts of Andhra Pradesh, with heavy to extremely heavy precipitation reported at 161 locations.
The continuing downpour has raised concerns about waterlogging, overflowing drainage systems and possible flooding in vulnerable areas.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as strong winds and sustained rainfall could further complicate rescue operations and disrupt essential services.
Flights And Trains Cancelled
The approaching cyclone has also affected transportation networks.
At least 21 flights operating through Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam airports have been cancelled as a precautionary measure.
Railway authorities have suspended at least 50 train services, anticipating potential risks to passenger safety and infrastructure along affected routes.
Travellers have been advised to check updated schedules before beginning their journeys.
Armed Forces And Disaster Response Teams On Standby
Emergency preparedness measures have been strengthened across the region, with disaster response personnel positioned to assist in evacuation and rescue operations.
The Indian Navy and Coast Guard have also been placed on alert to support emergency operations if required.
Authorities are focusing on protecting vulnerable populations, maintaining essential supplies and ensuring that rescue teams can respond quickly to emergencies arising from the storm.
Weather Alerts Extend Beyond Coastal Andhra Pradesh
Although Andhra Pradesh is expected to face the immediate impact of landfall, the cyclone's influence could extend into neighbouring states.
Odisha has stepped up precautionary arrangements, while weather alerts have also been issued for West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Officials remain concerned about the possibility of prolonged rainfall and associated flooding as the weather system moves inland.
With landfall approaching, the coming hours will be critical for coastal communities and emergency agencies working to minimise damage and safeguard lives.
