Deadline Passes for India Coach Applications with Both Gambhir and BCCI Maintaining Silence
Deadline for India coach applications closes with both Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI opting for silence on the matter
28-05-2024The deadline for applications for the position of chief coach of the Indian men's cricket team concluded on Monday, with both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the top candidate, Gautam Gambhir, opting to remain silent on the matter.
Despite leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL trophy on Sunday, Gambhir's candidacy has gained considerable momentum. However, neither Gambhir nor the BCCI has made any official statements regarding the development.
Sources suggest that the BCCI may be facing a shortage of quality options for the role. It is reported that no notable foreign candidates have applied for the position, particularly after BCCI secretary Jay Shah emphasized the board's preference for a candidate familiar with the domestic cricket structure.
While VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy, was considered a prime target for the role, he appears to be uninterested in a full-time position that would require a ten-month commitment annually.
Speaking on the matter, a BCCI source stated that although the deadline has passed, the board may take more time to reach a decision. With the Indian team occupied with the upcoming World T20 for most of June, and subsequent tours to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe where NCA-based coaches could accompany the team, there is no rush to finalize the appointment.
