Delhi’s public transport system received a major boost on Wednesday as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu launched 200 electric buses, taking the Delhi Transport Corporation’s total fleet to around 6,800.

A key highlight of the expansion is the return of Ladies Special bus services, with 56 buses earmarked for routes serving universities and other corridors where demand from women passengers is high.

The new fleet will support 30 Ladies Special trips across 15 busy routes, along with 26 University Ladies Special trips operating on 13 routes. Gupta recalled using university-specific buses during her student years and said the services had been unavailable for nearly three decades.

The government also inaugurated a public electric-vehicle charging facility at Rajghat Depot-I. In addition, five fully electric, air-conditioned inter-state buses were introduced on the Delhi-Karnal corridor. The approximately 133-km route will see 10 services operating in each direction every day.

Following the latest induction, Delhi’s bus fleet comprises about 4,938 electric buses and 1,750 CNG-powered buses. Gupta said Delhi now has the largest electric-bus fleet among Indian cities.

Sandhu highlighted the significance of the women-only services, saying they would provide not merely public transport but a safer mobility option for female passengers.

The chief minister also pointed to the government’s broader push towards electric mobility, saying Delhi was simultaneously expanding charging infrastructure and extending financial incentives through its electric vehicle policy.
