Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) is set to enhance passenger connectivity at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) by introducing an air train that will link Terminal 1 with Terminals 2 and 3. As the busiest airport in India, IGIA operates three terminals: T1, T2, and T3.

DIAL plans to implement an "elevated and at-grade Automated People Mover (APM) System" using a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer model. A tender for the air train has already been issued.

Improved Connectivity for Passengers

The APM system aims to provide quick and seamless transit between Terminal 1 and the other two terminals, covering a distance of approximately 7.7 kilometers through Aerocity and Cargo City. According to information on the airport's website, this initiative will enhance passenger convenience, boost Airport Service Quality (ASQ) scores, and contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

The website noted, “The APM system is intended to provide reliable, fast, and seamless connectivity between Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 and 3, spanning a route length of around 7.7 km via Aerocity and Cargo City.”

Details on Bidding and Implementation

As of now, specific details regarding the bidding deadline and eligibility criteria for potential bidders have not been released.

What Are Air Trains?

Air trains are typically free transit systems used at international airports, allowing for easy movement between terminals. These systems often function as monorails, providing travelers with efficient transportation, especially for those connecting between flights. Air trains operate at short intervals, making it convenient for passengers to transfer between terminals.

The Need for an Air Train at Delhi Airport

Delhi airport, which serves over 70 million passengers annually, is the busiest in India. To accommodate future growth, the airport aims to double its capacity to 130 million passengers within the next 6-8 years, making the introduction of an air train crucial.

Currently, Terminal 1 is situated some distance away from Terminals 2 and 3, requiring passengers to travel by road. The new Terminal 1 commenced operations on August 17, further underscoring the need for improved inter-terminal connectivity.
