The controversy surrounding the Delhi Chief Minister’s official bungalow, previously occupied by Arvind Kejriwal, has become a focal point in the heated political discourse ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. The BJP has been labeling the property at 6 Flag Staff Road as a "sheesh mahal" (palace of mirrors), suggesting opulence and misuse of public funds.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva alleged that the bungalow’s renovation cost taxpayers ₹3.75 crore, claiming it included extravagant features like a gym, sauna, and jacuzzi. Sachdeva further detailed the expenses, stating that ₹1.9 crore was spent on marble and granite lighting, ₹1.5 crore on civil work, and ₹35 lakh on gym and spa fittings. He accused Kejriwal of betraying his "aam aadmi" (common man) image, highlighting the perceived disconnect between the luxury and his political branding.
"Those who once promised to live simply and not misuse public resources are now looting taxpayers’ money to build a seven-star resort for themselves," Sachdeva said, adding that the cost of the renovations could have funded affordable housing or public transportation projects for Delhi’s common people.
In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) dismissed the accusations as baseless propaganda. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia criticized the BJP for focusing on Kejriwal’s former residence instead of addressing critical issues like education and healthcare. "While people demand better schools and hospitals, the BJP is busy discussing a bungalow. This is an attempt to divert attention from real problems," Sisodia said.
The BJP’s allegations are not new. Earlier this year, the party accused AAP of spending over ₹45 crore on renovations, calling it a betrayal of Kejriwal’s promises of simple living. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also initiated an inquiry into potential irregularities in tender processes during the renovation. However, a formal case is yet to be filed as the investigation continues.
Kejriwal, meanwhile, has dismissed the allegations and welcomed the probe, asserting that no illegalities would be found. He accused the BJP of using such controversies to undermine his party and shift the focus from critical governance issues.
As both parties gear up for the upcoming polls, the "bungalow controversy" underscores the growing tensions between AAP and the BJP, setting the stage for a politically charged election season.
