Delhi awoke to light rain on Saturday following the heaviest single-day June rainfall in 88 years, which caused widespread disruptions across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light to moderate rain over the next five days, with heavy showers expected in some areas until July 1.

Ongoing Issues and Updates:

  1. Casualties and Rescues: Tragically, two young boys drowned while playing in a water-filled ditch in New Usmanpur, and another man drowned at a Shalimar Bagh underpass. In Vasant Vihar, rescuers retrieved one laborer's body from a collapsed wall, with efforts continuing to find two more.
  2. Water Supply Interruptions: Rain caused a malfunction at the Chandrawal pump house, affecting water supply in several regions, a disruption expected to persist through Saturday.
  3. Airport Operations: Terminal-1 at Delhi airport remains closed after a canopy collapse resulted in one death and four injuries. Flights are temporarily redirected to Terminals 2 and 3.
  4. Damage and Inconvenience: Numerous trees were uprooted, causing property damage and blocking streets. Residents in some areas had to navigate waist-deep water to leave their homes.
  5. Ongoing Rescue Efforts: Passengers stranded in a bus under a flooded Kishanganj underpass were rescued by emergency teams, who waded through deep water to ensure their safety.

Government Response:

  • The Delhi government has established a 24-hour control room to manage the waterlogging crisis, with mobile pumps deployed and quick response teams addressing complaints.
  • Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered the setup of an emergency control room and the deployment of static pumps to alleviate flooding.

The IMD attributed the heavy rainfall to multiple monsoonal weather systems and thermodynamic instability in the atmosphere, leading to severe thunderstorms and downpours on Friday.
