In an effort to prevent further escalation in the ongoing inheritance conflict surrounding the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s ₹30,000-crore estate, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday urged his family members to consider mediation and settle their disagreements amicably.
A bench headed by Justice Mini Pushkarna was reviewing several pleas connected to a lawsuit filed by Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, who is seeking to dismantle the RK Family Trust and has questioned the legitimacy of the trust agreement executed in October 2017.
At the heart of the case is a petition requesting the recovery of assets that were allegedly shifted into the trust. During proceedings, the court highlighted the importance of maintaining family harmony and encouraged all parties to work toward a peaceful resolution.
Justice Pushkarna reminded those involved that inherited wealth should remain a source of gratitude rather than conflict, cautioning against allowing financial disputes to damage personal relationships. The court also underscored Rani Kapur’s senior citizen status and urged family members to treat her with dignity.
Drawing on past legal experience, the bench noted that family-related legal battles often contain distorted narratives, advocating for collective discussions to reach a fair settlement.
Representing Rani Kapur, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar requested safeguards to prevent potential misuse or depletion of the estate while the case remains pending. He accused Sunjay Kapur’s widow, Priya Kapur, of acting hastily and in a questionable manner with respect to estate management.
Rani Kapur’s challenge has gained backing from her daughter Mandira Kapur, along with Karisma Kapoor’s children, who have expressed support for contesting the trust’s validity. Karisma Kapoor was previously married to Sunjay Kapur.
Meanwhile, Priya Kapur’s counsel, senior advocate Akhil Sibal, defended the late businessman’s role in reviving the family enterprise, stating that Kapur successfully transformed a loss-making company into a profitable one, eventually leading to a public listing in 2021.
For now, the High Court has issued notices on Priya Kapur’s applications seeking to have the case dismissed. The parties have been instructed to submit replies within four weeks, followed by rejoinders within the subsequent two weeks.
The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for March 23.
