Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena held the 19th meeting of the 'Task Force on Women Safety' on Friday, directing officials to identify 500 women interested in driving public transport vehicles. This initiative aims to empower women economically while enhancing safety measures in the capital.

Saxena called for an immediate 15-day campaign across all Delhi government departments to pinpoint and address dark spots in the city, with a commitment to complete the work within two weeks. He requested "before and after" photos to ensure accountability. The Delhi Police were tasked with conducting a new audit to identify areas needing better lighting, particularly around bus stops.

During the meeting, it was reported that the Safetipin Audit identified 1,406 dark spots requiring improved lighting, of which 1,158 have already been addressed. Saxena urged the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to complete the remaining work within a month.

To further support women's economic empowerment, Saxena proposed training 500 women to operate public transport vehicles, building on the success of the "Drone Didis" initiative. Currently, 660 women drive auto-rickshaws, 96 operate DTC buses, and 1,100 serve as female bus conductors.

On the technological front, the Transport Department announced the installation of panic buttons in 1,121 buses, with plans to integrate these with emergency call number 112. The Delhi Police reported that 10,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras have been installed in key locations, and 15 all-women PCR vans are available to assist women in distress. Additionally, 15 Cyber Crime police stations are now operational in the city.

The meeting also discussed ongoing campaigns such as 'Nirbheek,' 'Nazuk,' and 'Parivartan,' which are vital for fostering social change. As of August 2024, 18,102 male students have undergone counseling aimed at promoting respect and gender equality. Saxena emphasized the importance of ensuring that PCR vans are prepared for real-time responses to incidents.

He stressed the need for better maintenance and cleanliness of public facilities and directed the Education Department to expedite the revision of gender-sensitive curricula. Furthermore, Saxena expressed concern over the underutilization of "Sakhi One-Stop Centers," calling for immediate action to address funding and operational issues.

The LG highlighted that ensuring women's safety involves more than just policing; it requires a societal shift in attitudes toward women, driven by education and awareness programs focused on young boys.
