Delhi Minister Atishi remains steadfast in her indefinite hunger strike, now in its fourth day, despite doctors from Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital advising her to get admitted due to deteriorating health. Atishi has vowed to persist until Haryana releases Delhi's claimed share of water.
"My blood pressure and sugar levels are dropping, and my weight has decreased. Ketone levels are alarmingly high, posing long-term health risks," Atishi stated. Despite these concerns, she refused hospitalization, emphasizing, "No matter the toll on my body, I will continue the fast until Haryana releases the water."
Delhi is currently facing a severe water shortage, with Atishi accusing the BJP-led Haryana government of withholding 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water, affecting over 2.8 million residents in the capital.
"Delhi's water supply depends entirely on neighboring states. The BJP government in Haryana has withheld 100 MGD, equivalent to more than 46 crore litres, of Delhi's rightful share," she asserted.
In response, Delhi cabinet ministers gathered at the hunger strike site in Jangpura, deciding to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention. "We also invite Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena and all officials to Wazirabad and Bawana to verify the flow meter readings and river water levels themselves. The data clearly shows the reduced water released by Haryana," stated Environment Minister Gopal Rai.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has planned a candlelight march to support Atishi's fast, insisting that Delhi must receive its fair share of water.
Previously, Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena met with an AAP delegation and reported that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini assured he would explore the possibility of providing additional water to Delhi.
